Pratima Visharjan (1915)

Just ran across Gaganendranath Tagore's 1915 Pratima Visharjan, after a very long time.

Here, I am flagging light as a marker of significance- All the light in this picture is focused around the figure of the goddess, reflecting her importance both within the image, and  in the world represented by this picture. This is also a comment on the fact that light during the night hours had a certain value as a rare, and perhaps precious commodity, so those who had access to it must use it wisely.

Things are very different now, of course.

Shubho Bijoya.
